I was trained as a
writer by my father (a hobbist painter who was a frustrated writer, too), my English
teachers and Journalism professors. I seemed to have a natural ability for expressing
myself on paper, although I was much less successful than others in school due to my
excessive fear of failure. Looking back, I can see the important hand many fine people had
in honing my skills, encouraging my delight in creating poetry and cheerleading my
attempts at other creative expression.
Self-awareness of my talent didn't come until I was sent to Israel in 1972
and wrote "letters" back to the local newspaper as a form of public relations.
When I returned, my work had been published verbatim. The head of the Journalism
Department at the University of Richmond called and insisted that I finish college under
his tutelage. Today, my job is as a writer and marketing director. I write songs mostly
for fun.
