I've always been
fascinated by technology...toys are so much fun. And I expect my love of science helps.
Anyway, I resorted to a PC back in '83, when my handwriting was so far gone no one, not
even me, could decipher some of it. As a writer, of course, everything I worked on was
rewritten a number of times. Eventually, the IBM Selectric typewriter was even a burden
for revisions. My first PC was an Osborne Executive, CPM OS. Went for three years on that,
then bought an NEC DOS laptop: 640 K and dual 720 K floppy drives. Wow! Later, I started
buying direct, first from Northgate (eventually acquired by Gateway), then from local
brown bag suppliers. Even tried building one myself, and then rebuilding all my others.
That worked pretty well until I figured out I was spending way lots of time and saving way
little money. The falling prices of technology simply didn't make the "home
built" equation work. But it was vital experience.
The last computers I acquired were 3 HP Pavilions, completly networked in my home for
office and studying/surfing. I have a Dell Dimension for my freelance workstation and
theGateway P-150 runs the music composing studio. Currently, my home runs on a thin coax
network, with five PCs, two Macintosh Powerbooks, an HP All In One Printer/Scaner/Copier
and one EPSON Stylus color ink-jet printer.
