[G]Wonderin' if she [F]changed at all, [C]if her hair was still red. [G]Her folks said our [F]lives together [G]sure was gonna be [F]rough. [G]They never did like mama's [F]homemade dress; [C]Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough. [D]I was standin' on the [Em]side of the road [G]Rain fallin' on my [C]shoes. [D]Headin' out for the [Em]east coast Lord [G]knows I've paid some dues gettin' [D]through [F]Tangled [C]up in [G]blue. [G4] [G] [G4] [G]She was married when [F]we first met, [G]soon to be di[F]vorced [G]I helped her out of a [F]jam I guess but I [C]used a little too much force. We [G]drove that car as [F]far as we could, ab[G]andoned it out [F]west. [G]Split up up on a [F]dark sad night both agr[C]eein' it was best. [D]She turned around to [Em]look at me As [G]I was walkin' [C]away. I [D]heard her say o[Em]ver my shoulder "We'll [G]meet again some day on the aven[D]ue" [F]Tangled [C]up in [G]blue. [G4] [G] [G4] [G]I had a job in the [F]Great North Woods [G]workin' as a cook for [F]spell But I [G]never did like it [F]all that much and one [C]day the axe just fell. So I [G]drifted down to [F]New Orleans where I was [G]lucky 'nough to be em[F]ployed [G]Workin' for a while on a [F]fishing boat right out[C]side Delacroix. But [D]all the while I [Em]was alone The [G]past was close be[C]hind [D]I met a lot of [Em]women But she [G]never escaped my mind and I just [D]grew [F]Tangled [C]up in [G]blue. [G4] [G] [G4] [G]She was workin' in a [F]topless place when I [G]stopped in for a [F]beer. I [G]just kept lookin' at the [F]side of her face in the [C]spot light so clear. [G]Later on as the [F]crowd thinned out I was [G]just about to do the [F]same. She was [G]standin' there in [F]back of my chair sayin' "[C]Tell me, don`t I know your na me?" [D]I muttered something under[Em]neath my breath. She [G]studied the lines on my [C]face. I [D]must admit I was a [Em]little uneasy When she [G]bent down to tie the laces on my [D]shoe. [F]Tangled [C]up in [G]blue. [G4] [G] [G4] [G]She lit a burner [F]on the stove and [G]offered me a [F]pipe. "I [G]thought you'd never say [F]hello" she said; "You [C]look like the silent type." [G]Then she opened up a [F]book of poems and [G]handed it to [F]me. [G]Written by an I[F]talian poet from the [C]13th century. And [D]everyone of those [Em]words rang true And [G]glowed like a burnin' [C]coal. [D]Flowing off of [Em]every page Like it was [G]written in my soul from me to [D]you. [F]Tangled [C]up in [G]blue. [G4] [G] [G4] [G]I lived with him on [F]Montague Street in a [G]basement down the [F]stairs. There was [G]music in the caf[F]es at night and revo[C]lution in the air. [G]Then he started into [F]dealing in slaves and [G]somethin' inside of him [F]died. She [G]had to sell every[F]thing she owned and just [C]froze up inside. [D]Then at last when the [Em]bottom fell out [G]I became with[C]drawn. The [D]only thing I knew [Em]how to do Was to [G]keep on keepin' on like a bird that [D]flew [F]Tangled [C]up in [G]blue. [G4] [G] [G4] [G]Now I'm going [F]back again, I've got to [G]get to her some[F]how. [G]All the people we [F]used to know they're an ill[C]usion to me now. [G]Some are matheme[F]ticians, [G]some are carpenter's [F]wives. [G]Don't know how it [F]all got started; I don't know [C]what they're doin' with their li ves. But [D]me I'm still [Em]on the road [G]Headin' for another [C]joint. [G]We always did [Em]feel the same We just [G]saw it from a different point of [D]view. [F]Tangled [C]up in [G]blue. [G4] [G] [G4]
